the dwelling site of Nobuzane Hidaka
Nobuzane Hidaka, a great man in Meiji era, retired from the War Office in 1886 in the age of 50, borrowed nationally‐owned land of about 230 ha for free of charge, moved in this area to develope the Umegase Utopia . With a great help of the residents of 10 neighbour villages, he devoted himself to tree planting, fish breeding and stock raising, and opened Umegase Shodo school to teach neighbour students Japanese, English, mathematics, calligraphy, Kendo(Japanese fencing) and brought them up to competent and efficient men. About several hundreds of students came from 5 different counties. However, its geographical features of high mountains and deep valleys were bad, therefore, by every typhoon and heavy rain, mountains were collapsed, the river was buried, Japanese apricot trees which have just took root into the soil were fallen, and the fish farm was damaged. Nobuzane devoted himself to restore the land spending his own funds, however, he couldn't accomplish his purpose and passed away in the age of 80 in 1916, deeply regreted by neighbours. For most people, the remain of Umegase Shodo school isn't a reminder of the past, and even, people who know about Nobuzane Hidaka are decreasing, these days. Then, to hand down his ambition to posterity, some interested people made a plan to build a monument praising Nobuzane publicly for his unrecognized effort, and it obtained large numbers of people's approval. On 23 Nov.1999, three monuments of Nobuzane Hidaka were unveiled at the remain of school, Daifukuyama observatory and Yoro keikoku station.
